Discovery Camp - One Week

Ages 6 - 8

This week-long camp is for ages 6-8, running Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00pm.

The goal of this innovative and engaging camp is for kids to have fun while learning and playing with others. Participants will be challenged to grow their confidence, and create healthy habits, through on-the-land and on-the-water lessons and activities.

On the land, campers will participate in age-appropriate activities that bring out their sense of enjoyment and appreciation for taking on new challenges! Participants will learn about local species and habitats, take on daily individual and group discovery tasks, stretch their creativity with various arts and crafts, and deepen their understanding of how to work with others.

On the water, campers will participate in 2-3 prolonged sailing sessions throughout the week, where they will explore their surroundings in a safe, engaging, environment. Participants will learn the basics of sailing, be taught the importance of dock and water safety, and get hours of experience in the watercraft. For all on-water activity, our highly-experienced, Sail Canada-certified, instructors ensure safety, and keep a low child to leader ratio. (Since sailing is a weather-dependent activity, instructors will make every effort to work around any poor weather conditions so that participants get as much on-the-water experience as possible. This being said, we cannot guarantee how much time will be spent on the water.)

Discovery Camp will teach new sailing skills, and for many, will be a solid stepping stone to taking CANSail levels at a later date. This camp does not focus on participants earning their CANSail levels, but rather focuses on the enjoyment of being active and getting on the water with others!

We look forward to your child joining us for an exciting week of fun and discovery!

CANSail 4 - Two Week - Development Team

In this advanced level sailors are part of our Development Team to complete their CANSail 4 skills. This course prepares sailors to become part of our Race Team or work towards joining our Staff Team as instructors in the future.

At this point in their sailing career they are introduced to double-handed skills such as spinnaker and trapeze.

This program emphasizes high-performance sailing and basic racing skills. So, whether your goal is to be a highly competent leisure sailor, or an aspiring racer, this course has you covered!

As part of the Development team a C420 will be assigned to you and your partner. This will be your boat for the duration of the session. Washing, maintaining, naming and rigging your boat is you and your partner's responsibility.

A coach will always be available to assist and give guidance accordingly.

This is your chance to know what owning your own boat is like.

Due to the more advanced nature of this program, a four-week commitment is encouraged. However, we also understand family schedules and restraints. Because of this, we are offering a few spots in a two week timeframe.

There will also be opportunity to attend a local regatta, an excellent way to put your new skills to the test!

High Performance Race Team

Sailing in NSC's best C420 dinghies, the racers will be exposed to higher-level boat handling skills through on-water drills and on-shore coaching sessions while attending various regattas. Each team member is generally working on their CANSail 5 or 6 certification.

Centered on a training camp atmosphere, sailors will refine advanced sailing skills and learn racing rules, tactics, strategy, and regatta preparation. The racers will also be working towards the internationally recognized CANsail certification, Level 5 and 6.

As part of a well rounded program, we also give all our team opportunities to volunteer in different roles throughout the season.

Some of these roles include:

Companion Sailor in our AbleSail program.

Leading games in Adventure Camp

Extra work projects

Assist on the water for club racing

Racers are expected to commit to the full program comprising the Spring training (dates and times will be determined by your coach) as your able along with the core 8 weeks of summer.

Coaching fees, food, lodging, gas for regattas* are not included. More explanation below as these expenses will be split between all participants who attend.

The coaches with the team determine what Regattas we will attend. An estimated cost per regatta will be available and purchase can be made at the STC office.

Note:

-This program requires several weekends of travel and demands a high level of commitment from both sailors and their parents.

-Parents are responsible for chaperoning their youth and for transportation of their boat and equipment. Club trailers will be available. Towing costs are shared equally by team members attending the event.

-Regatta fees and travel expenses (transportation, lodging, and food) are not covered in the program fee.

-Prices below are per person (not per boat)

-sailors do NOT need their own boat. They sail using NSC hulls/sails
